Minutes from MS 2001 Boards Prep Panel for USMLE Step I

Dave Peterson—

    • studied 4-5wks
    • Started some 1st Aid studying earlier by tape recording the whole book then listening during his free time—felt he almost had the book memorized using this technique
    • BRS books—path and phys are key!
    • Thought Exam Master had questions that were too hard and lengthy

Pete Maughan and Brian Hall—

    • Studied for about 8wks
    • Studied in am then quizzed (Trivial Pursuit-like questions) with a group in pm.
    • Recommends group study to break up monotony
    • Recommends BRS path and phys. Also USMLE Sample Questions.
    • Took frequent breaks—GOLFING
    • Last two weeks just did questions.
    • Relaxed for last 3 days before test
    • Don’t get too stressed out

Niki CHRISTENSEN

    • Write out a schedule and stick to it
    • Studied by organ system during the day and then did questions about the OS at night.
    • Practice tests were key. Exam master was too hard but did help build up endurance.
    • One week before test—did Kaplan diagnostic test
    • Two days prior did another large practice test
    • Studied with two others.

Janet Labrum—

    • Started around Thanksgiving
    • Made 1st Aide Flashcards and read throughout year on free time
    • Serious study 8-10 weeks before boards—did 4wks @ 8hrs/day and 4wks @ 4hrs/day
    • Memorized 1st Aide as much as possible
    • Thought test was weighted 70% 2nd year stuff vs. 30% 1st year stuff
    • For Biochem recommends "Digging up the bones"—it had all the questions on her test
    • Practice Tests—NMS covered all the right topics, maybe a little easier than real test
    • Two nights before test skimmed 1st Aide, relaxed the day before
    • On test, recommended taking a small break between every one hour test block

Holly Rausch—

    • Importance of planning ahead with a good schedule for each day
    • Study hard for path final—very good for boards prep
    • NMS was good

Justin Parkinson—

    • Know 1st Aid for Boards, didn’t use much else

Ryan Nelson—

    • Did lot’s of questions—used retired USMLE questions and NMS book which worked well

Overall test day tips—

    • Avoid pretest psych
    • Bring snacks
