Essential book, September 14, 2003
Reviewer: Nathan Hanson, MS2004; Study Philosophy: Goin' for a competitive residency
With Dr. Jorde teaching directly from this book and using it as a reference/syllabus, this book is essential. Besides, it is well written.

Take notes in the book, September 12, 2003
Reviewer: Nate Miller, MS2006; Study Philosophy: Beat the mean
This is basically your syllabus for the course. It is clear and easy to read, and like I said it is what Sr. Jorde uses as the basis for his lectures,

Class based on this book, September 11, 2003
Reviewer: Josh Garcia, MS2006; Study Philosophy: Beat the mean
So much of the lectures and principles you need to know are found in this book. Necessary for this course.

This book saved my genetics grade, September 11, 2003
Reviewer: Sarah Petersen, MS2006; Study Philosophy: P = MD
I was sick for a lot of the second block and didn't go to class much (ask any of my classmates who might just say "Sarah, who?". This book was like having Dr. Jorde give me personal lectures while I sat comfortably on my couch. I did the questions at the end of each chapter - very helpful and surprisingly similar to the test questions. Don't even think twice about not getting this book.

This Book is the Syllabus, September 11, 2003
Reviewer: Todd Miller, MS2006; Study Philosophy: Beat the mean
Written by Dr. Jorde for his own lectures. You need this book!

It's worth buying!, September 11, 2003
Reviewer: Angela De La O, MS2006; Study Philosophy: Beat the mean
I'm not usually a book person, but this book was definitely worth it!

Great book, September 11, 2003
Reviewer: Arash Mohajer, MS2006; Study Philosophy: Goin' for a competitive residency
If there is one book that you have to buy, this would be it. This book simplifies lectures and makes everything easier to understand. The majority of material in lecture are presented in the book.

Get the book, September 11, 2003
Reviewer: Melissa Bentley, MS2006; Study Philosophy: Beat the mean
This was a very helpful book, written by professor Jorde, who donates royalties back to the class for a party- so it is worth buying!

get it for the class, not sure about board value.

Worth getting, September 8, 2003
Reviewer: Christy Chan, MS2006; Study Philosophy: Beat the mean
Since it was written by the professor himself, the book easily followed his lectures. In addition, I found the word problems excellent preparation for the exams.

Buy it, September 5, 2003
Reviewer: Erica Wittwer, MS2006; Study Philosophy: Beat the mean
This book is helpful for the course, some people took notes directly onto their books and didn't bother with the syllabus. It is actually interesting to read and the practice problems are very helpful for the tests. I haven't taken the boards so I don't know how helpful it will be then.

Get it, September 5, 2003

Written by the course director, you don't even need to take notes during lecture.

Necessary for Class, September 2, 2003
Reviewer: Trevor Satterfield, MS2006; Study Philosophy: Beat the mean
This is great book. I followed the book as Jorde lectured and found this an easy way to review and prepare for tests. The questions at the end of each chapter are great preparation for the exams. I definitely recommend using the book during the course.

a must have, June 4, 2002
Reviewer: Joanne Davis, MS2004; Study Philosophy: Beat the mean
you have to have this book! it's easy to read, has problems to do at the end of the chapter (do these) and has interesting pictures. dr. jorde is a great lecturer and all the information he presents in class is in the book, so if you decide to fall asleep in the middle of class you can always read the chapter to see what you missed. i doubt you need to know genetics in so much detail for the boards but it's good to review the main concepts.

Buy it or Else!!, May 30, 2002
Reviewer: Keith VanCuran, MS2005; Study Philosophy: Beat the mean
You MUST buy this book. Don't think, just do it. Dr. Jorde, who teaches the course, wrote this book. Everything on the test and in lecture is straight out of the book. I took the book to class and highlighted along with lecture. He has no really lecture notes so the book is it. Ditto on what everyone says about the practice problems. Also, you really don't need the latest brand new edition. Buy one that is the previous edition, there is very little difference and it won't affect your grade.

Good for practice problems, May 29, 2002
Reviewer: Jennifer Rasmussen, MS2005; Study Philosophy: P = MD
If you have this book you won't need to go to class. The practice problems at the end of the chapters are wonderful preparation for the actual test problems.

Must have, May 29, 2002
Reviewer: Ryan Jackson, MS2005; Study Philosophy: Beat the mean
You need this book. The syllabus is just an outline. The book is very well written and Dr. Jorde's lectures follow the book closely.

Good Reference, May 29, 2002
Reviewer: Seth Spanos, MS2004; Study Philosophy: Beat the mean
This book is absolutely necessary for the course. It is "the syllabus" for the course. The genetics on the boards is covered in biochem and other courses, so I would not use this as a board study book.

Gotta have it!, August 25, 2001
Reviewer: Matt Morgan, MS2003; Study Philosophy: Beat the mean
Dr. Jorde basically wrote this text and he lectures practically word for word from it! Makes class a breeze since it's all written down for you! Not too useful for boards, however. Too much on a narrow topic.

Essential for 1st Year, July 16, 2001
Reviewer: Gillian Baty, MS2004; Study Philosophy: P = MD
I can't comment on this book for boards, since I haven't taken them, but it is an essential book for the course. There are no syllabus notes since the professor "wrote the book" so to speak. It is also an excellent reference for down the road. You will need this book so get it.
