GroupWise Email Questions

Why won't my e-mail work?!?

MSIG, the group who brings you UMED, is not at all responsible for GroupWise e-mail. GroupWise is owned and operated by a department called "ITS." Their number is 581-5326, or you can visit their website. For all other computer problems, call the MSIG help desk at 585-3318.

If you must check your e-mail, you can try using the Citrix client. This can be useful when the GroupWise Web Client is often non-functioning. Click on the link below the GroupWise e-mail link called GroupWise Citrix Client. You must login as an "Explicit User" if you are off-campus -- this password is set by ITS and the Dean's Office. If on campus, it will automatically log you in. Under the Applications menu, select "GroupWise Any User". Eventually you should see a window that says "Novell GroupWise Startup". Enter your "u-number" (u0123456) and GroupWise password and you should be set.

What is my GroupWise username and password?

For the Groupwise Web Client, your Groupwise username can be your full name (John Doe) or your "u-number" (u0123456). We recommend using your u-number because this can also be used as your username when accessing the Citrix client.

NOTE:  Do not confuse your username and password for Groupwise with your username and password for the Campus Information System (CIS).

How do I change my username and password?

Currently, the U is attempting to make your "uNID" (u0123456) a universal username with its accompanying password (you use this for Campus Information Systems/Financial Aid and access to the library computers). However, the Groupwise e-mail system is different from this. You have a separate password initially for Groupwise (same uNID should work). Your Groupwise username and password are automatically set up and given to you at the beginning of the school year by the Dean's Office. If you want you can change your password to the same one has your uNID password. That way you'd only have to remember one. Save brain space for board minutiae.

If you would like to change your Groupwise password mid-year, you will need to page Sylvia at 339-5434.

Do I have to use GroupWise to check my email, or can I forward my email to another account?

No, you do not have to use GroupWise. Many students prefer to use other programs (such as Outlook, Eudora, or Netscape Mail, even Hotmail, or Yahoo! among others) to check their mail through what is called a "POP or SMTP server." You will need to go into the Preferences setting to set up your POP or SMTP server information within your e-mailing program. Many Internet email providers allow you to access other email accounts via a POP or SMTP server. You will need to find your preferences page in your Hotmail (or other) account, and set up the server according to the information below:

What is the POP and SMTP server information for Groupwise?
First try the SMTP information. We've heard word of the hospital phasing out their POP server.

POP/SMTP username: same as your GroupWise username (your uNID -- e.g. u0123456)
POP/SMTP password: same as your GroupWise password
POP server: gwpopa.med.utah.edu
SMTP server (or "Relay Host"): smtp.med.utah.edu
Return address: your full email account (e.g. John.Doe@hsc.utah.edu)

Dial-Up Questions

What are my University of Utah internet connection options?

1. Lower campus modem pool (free)

Now that ITS has discontinued the modem pool from the Health Sciences Center, the only free internet available is from the lower campus modem pool. There is a time limit of 3 hours per week on this service. There are two phone numbers that can be used:

(801)924-0783 will give you a connection for up to 60 minutes
(801)924-0639 will give you a connection for up to 15 minutes (your connection time is less, but the chances of you getting a busy signal are also less).

After you have your username and password, simply enter either the 15 or 60 minute phone number into your computer's internet connection settings. When you want to use the internet, enter your username and NID (password) and things should connect just like they did with the HSC modem pool.

2. UofU.net (monthly fee)

The University of Utah maintains an Internet Service Provider(ISP) for students and faculty. This service provides unlimited internet access and allows secured access to online University of Utah programs. Currently this costs only $9.95 per month. One can sign up at www.uofu.net or by getting a CD from the bookstore. This ISP also allows DSL and ISDN.

Are there any good dial-up deals that are off-campus?

We've used and liked a service called Access4Less which is the best option for the cheapest amount of money. It's an $8.95 start-up fee, but $5.95 per month.

Other Questions

How do I get rid of all those stupid pop-up ads?!?

We like Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and Spybot's Search & Destroy software to remove pop-ups and other forms of spyware.

Some Instructions:
  • Once you have downloaded and installed both of these, run them one at a time, beginning with checking for updates to the program.
  • Then run the programs to detect and safely remove any nasty adware/spyware.
  • When that doesn't work:

  • Occasionally, you must manually remove the program from your computer. This link tells how to remove many adware/spyware programs like "Search Toolbar" and "Gator" by going to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs

  • Prevention:

  • "My Search Bar" and its variants "My Way Search Assistant" and "My Way Speedbar" are programs bundled with popular free software like Morpheus, WeatherBug, and others. "My Search Bar" may not open pop-ups but is highly annoying because, unless removed, it will never let you open your own homepage. The anti-spyware programs should be able to remove this material, but it will reinstall itself if the offending free software (Morpheus, Weatherbug) remains on your computer, so uninstall it!!.
  •

Is there a way to get access to Eccles Library journal articles from off-campus?/What's the proxy information for the University?

Yes, it is frequently helpful to be able to access from home some (definitely not all) journal articles for which Eccles has subscriptions. There are two ways to do this: the easiest way is to go to http://vpnaccess.utah.edu and login with your uNID and password. You will then be prompted to type in a website. Why don't you put in good ol' UMED (umed.med.utah.edu)? Now you are surfing the internet "as if" you were on an on-campus computer. This is called a proxy, and it's free to students. Click on the PubMed link on UMED and it's as if you're in the library getting articles, but now you're able to get full texts (if the library has that particular subscription) at home. Cool, huh?

The other way to do is to get a specific VPN client using the above VPN address with your uNID and password. This program can be accessed here after you login.

If these instructions were confusing the library has a page that explains it more thoroughly
