President’s Message
To quickly introduce myself, I’m Aimee Hansen, one of your MSA co-presidents for the coming year. My husband is Mark Hansen, a fourth year who is going into ophthalmology. We have two children, Kimball and Eliza. We’ve loved our years in med school at the University of Utah.
I am so excited about this upcoming school year! Now that Mark has finally decided what field to go into, we’re working frantically on his residency applications. It’s hard to believe we’ll be into interview season soon, then moving off to residency next summer. This path to becoming a doctor certainly never lets you get too comfortable—there are always so many decisions and big changes just around the corner!
As we enter our fourth year of medical school, I often find myself reflecting on the experiences of the past three years. We have had a grand adventure—full of ups and downs and highs and lows. One of the things that has made it so rewarding has been the friendships my husband and I have had with other medical students and their families. Together we’ve been through new babies, difficult trials, unexpected blessings, stress over tests, impossible schedules, welcome holiday breaks, anxiety over the big decisions in front of us, and so much more. It has been wonderful to have the support of friends who are going through so many of the same things.
With a new year beginning in MSA, I want to encourage everyone to come to activities and to go out of your way to meet new people and expand your circle of friends. MSA offers the perfect opportunity for you to get involved with service or special interest groups (like book club or playgroup). It provides an easy way for you to meet other people who are going through these busy med school years. I promise you will find friends of a lifetime if you’ll simply make the effort.
Remember our MSA theme for the year: “Enjoy the little things in life—One day you’ll look back and realize they were the big things.” Hope to see you in MSA this year!
Sincerely,
Aimee Hansen
