Remembering Amber Jacobson

Many of you are aware that Amber Jacobson, wife of MSIV Trevor Jacobsen, passed away August 10, 2008. We mourn the loss of this beautiful young woman, wife, and mother. Amber, originally from Oregon, met Trevor when she moved to Salt Lake eight years ago. They were married in the LDS Bountiful Temple on August 1, 2001. They have two boys:
Matix, age three, and Nivelli, age 14 months. In response to an outpouring of love for Trevor and his children, the 4th year student body has organized a volunteer effort to support Trevor as he finishes medical school and applies for residency. Please email Porter Jones at porter.jones@hsc.utah.edu or Devin Horton at devin.horton@hsc.utah.edu if you would like to help the Jacobson family. Donations are also being accepted at Wells Fargo Bank/Amber Jacobson Memorial Fund/Private account/routing #12105278 (Account #8888362459).

“What We Wished We’d Known Before Med School”

“Medical s
chool is more than just 'school.'  It's more shadowing of doctors, it's volunteering, it's participating in clubs and committees.  I had to learn to see things from my husband's point of view and how important these extracurriculars are to him, rather than being frustrated that they took him away from home.”

Laurel Brennan, 2nd year

“The Board score matters more than everything else as far as applying to residency.  Be prepared for lots of anxiety and time devoted to this test. It’s also true that studying, tests, and evaluations definitely aren't over after 2nd year and Step 1 Boards.

Making an effort to meet other spouses of medical students makes the experience so much fuller.  Because we are in the same situation, this time is a great opportunity to make many wonderful and lasting friendship
s as a couple.

Everyone needs balance and breaks.  It's easy for the medical student to get anxious and feel like they have to study or work all the time, but it's important for healthy relationships to take time away from school occasionally--even if it's just for a brief walk with you or reading kids a bedtime story once in a while.”

Julie Randall, 3rd year

“I wish that we had thought to keep a running record of my husband’s public service, publications, and other extracurricular work. When we began his residency application, we spent considerable time researching times and dates for his activities.

A physician’s spouse once tried to stress to me that I would learn to be very independent because of my husband’s consuming work in medical school. I don’t think that I believed her until I found myself in third year, changing flat tires and using power tools with three little boys in tow!”

Amy Brinton, 4th year
