Heather Chandler, wife of a first-year medical student, sought out MSA as a way to meet new friends. “When we applied at a different progr
am,” she remembers, “they had an awesome spouse program. So I looked for you here.” The Chandlers recently moved from Cedar City, where they attended Southern Utah University. Although Heather studied Criminal Justice and Nutrition there, she says that she’d really like to be an aerobics instructor someday. But for now, she’s busy with her 14-month-old daughter, Emilie!

MSA member Seidi Bennett has many ties to medicine in Utah: her husband is a second-year student, her brother is a third-year
student, and her “Aunt Annie” (Ann Takasaki) is the current UMAA President. Seidi, from Gunnison, Utah, is a self-described “small-town girl” who loves anything “outdoorsy.” She earned a BM in Piano Performance from BYU, where she also performed as a member of the Young Ambassadors. Currently, Seidi is at the U working on her master’s degree, also in Piano Performance. (P.S. Seidi would like to mention that her aforementioned brother is both charming and single. If you know a cute girl, let Seidi know!)

When her husband began medical school three years ago, Emily McCune didn’t know anyone in Salt Lake. “Being in MSA was a
great way to meet people,” she says. “I would have missed out if I hadn’t joined.” Emily grew up in Boise, and she earned a degree in Dental Assisting from Boise State. She now attends the U and spends her free time skiing, backpacking, scrapbooking, and enjoying the outdoors. Emily has a 2-year-old son, David, and is expecting a new baby this February.
