AMA-MSS Committees...
This page contains descriptions of our chapter's various committees,
their aims, and contact people.
COMMUNITY
SERVICE
Aim: Our chapter has been very active in the community
since it's inception. We have only recently devoted a formal
committee to coordinate these efforts. The aim of this
committee is to decide on and organize worthwile projects that have
potential for making a difference.
Help Wanted: We always need help finding such opportunities and tailoring them in such a way as to be conducive to hectic medical student schedules, whilemaking them uniquely meaningful to future physicians. Please contact the chairperson of this committee if you have any ideas, or become aware of any needs in the community with which we might help.

SUTURE
CLINIC
Aim: For the past several years our chapter has
organized a suturing clinic to give students the chance to learn and
practice this important skill (which isn't really covered anywhere
else except for an afternoon during the Dermatology OS) BEFORE the
third year rotations. The clinic is held on a Friday afternoon in May
in the histo lab. Dr John Bezzant (Dermatology) has been the
instructor, and many of the plastic surgery faculty have also
expressed interest. We try to get available third and fourth year
students to help provide 1-on-1 instruction after Dr. Bez's
presentation. Participants will be supplied with suture, instruments,
and pigs feet for practicing their technique. Sterile syringes
and a few procedure trays will also be on hand to demonstrate
injection techniques and removal of skin lesions on a few lucky
participants. To help cover expenses, a materials fee of $5-10 (with
a discount for AMA members:-) is collected from participants.
Help Needed: This a pretty big production, with plenty of opportunities to help. Gathering suture from OR's and US Surgical reps, finding the cheapest pigs feet and getting them to the histo lab, getting the instruments ordered from central processing and then returning all of them, coordinating with the AV dept for the video camera and monitors in the lab, and getting publicity and the sign-up/fee collection done all make for a quite project. Please contact the chairperson if you're interested in helping.

PUBLIC
ACTIVISM
Aim: Our section's ability to affect change
depends on our ability to inform fellow students and our community
about important medical issues. Our chapter works closely with the
UMA's political action committee (we have a seat on their board) to
keep abreast of activities in the state legislature. We also
participate on a national level along with chapters from other
medical schools to stay informed and see that our voices are heard.
This committee acts to bring issues to the minds of our med students,
and provides a vehicle by which opinions can be formed and voiced. We
respect and encourage all perspectives and points of view --
concensus is not our necessarily our goal; rather, we seek quality of
information, freedom to think, and empowerment of all our voices.
Help Wanted: Every member can help out in one way or another with this effort (most of us do it all the time without realizing). We do need extra help getting students together for the annual day at the legislature in March, among other things.
