The Scoop Biochemistry is an important subject on the boards, and it is a wise student who attempts to learn it well during the first year. In addition to questions on various aspects of metabolism, there are many questions on the boards concerning biochemically-based diseases. This could be your most challenging course of the whole year (depending on your experience). You should plan on investing some time with this one. Lectures can be way above what you really need to know. Use the notes more than anything else. Take a look at old tests before you get too stressed out. Study at the level of the tests. The final tends to be tough.

Recommended Books

The syllabus for this course is very detailed. Unless you are either a biochemistry wizard or want a definitive reference book, buy Lippincott for this course - now the "required" text for the course. Lippincott has been rated highly for both class use as well as for USMLE preparation. Use references in the library (i.e. Stryer) to study minutiae covered in class.
